Sledmere House

The home of Sir Tatton Sykes, 8th Baronet.

Amongst Country homes, Sledmere House ranks highly in the list of visitors’ favourite places to visit in East Yorkshire with many events happening throughout the year.

It is a House of unique character and charm is now maintained as a family home and is the centre piece of a thriving rural estate.

Here you will find a tea room, gardens and the Triton gallery to visit.

Hockney travelled through Sledmere on the way from Bridlington to York many times, and it was here that he found inspiration to paint ‘The Road to York Through Sledmere‘ in 1979.

Burton Agnes Hall

Burton Agnes Hall is a short car journey from Bridlington and offers lots of great things for the visitor.

The gardens were part of a series of paintings named Midsummer: East Yorkshire (Jungle Garden, Burton Agnes Hall), 2005.

The gardens are carefully tendered and there are pleasant woodland walks with many specimen trees to see. There is an art gallery which displays local art many of which is available for sale.

In the hall it is filled with treasures collected and commissioned by the family over four centuries. The original Elizabethan carving and plasterwork still decorates many rooms, while there are some lovely examples of Georgian furniture and porcelain and many modern French and English paintings of the Impressionist Schools.

Marcus Wickham-Boynton, the previous owner of Burton Agnes Hall, started his collection of English and French paintings of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in 1937 with the encouragement of two collector friends; Lord Ivor Spencer Churchill and the Right Hon. Harcourt ‘Crinks’ Johnstone. His appreciation of French Impressionists owed much to the influence of Samuel Courtauld. The directors of the Adams Gallery gave him much valuable advice and help in the choice of individual paintings.

Sewerby Hall and Gardens

Sewerby Gardens

Sewerby Hall is situated 2 miles north of the seaside resort of Bridlington, on the East Yorkshire coast. The grade I listed country house is set in 50 acres of landscaped gardens in a cliff top location on the outskirts of Sewerby village.

The Hall houses a large number of historical items relating to the local area.

The West Wing Gallery houses a rolling programme of exhibitions that showcase the best of East Riding Art and Sculpture. It is also home to the annual Open Art exhibition which is open to amateur and professional artists within a forty mile radius. The Regency Room contains art works from the local area throughout the season when Sewerby Hall is open.

In the Amy Johnson room a collection of exhibits celebrate the life of the aviator made famous for her solo flight to Australia.

Burnby Hall and Gardens

Close to the centre of Pocklington on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds Burnby Hall and Gardens are home to a National Collection of Hardy Water Lilies – the biggest such collection to be found in a natural setting in Europe.

The two lakes that contain the lilies are set in eight acres of beautiful gardens – including rock gardens, a natural shrubbery, formal beds, the Secret Garden, a Victorian Garden and many other attractions, details of which may be found here on our website.

Millington Pastures, one of the few areas of access land in the Yorkshire Wolds is a fantastic place to walk and cycle and easily accessible from the nearby market town of Pocklington. During Hockneys visit here in 2004 the artist created a water colour painting called ‘A Larger Valley’ which measures 101.6 x 153 cm.

Millington Woods is one of the few remaining wooded dales in the Yorkshire Wolds. It is a popular beauty spot and is known locally for its springs – Millington Springs – which formerly supported large beds of watercress. Millington Pastures holds a stock of highland cattle, it is also renowned for its beautiful scenery, for bike riding and for walking.

Hockney visited this location during 2006. On my visit, there had been a recent snow fall making the scene appear very different from the painting that the artist had done. Things that do not change however, so making recognition of the landscape easier are the positions of the trees and hedges.

This location took a little finding. On the road from Kilham to Langtoft I found the place where the painting ‘Tracks Into Wheat Field Near Langtoft, July 2005.

Of interest in Langtoft is The Old Mill Hotel and Restaurant which serves food from our widely varied A La Carte menu from 12 until 2:00 in the afternoon and 6.00pm until 9:00 in the evenings.

There is a local pub called the Ship Inn on Scarborough Road.

The following picture was taken on a very cold winters day in February 2012.

The location on a map is here
